In the Commonwealth of Virginia:
If you are under age 18:
- You are eligible for your Learner’s Permit at the age of 15 years and 6 months.
- If you have held your Learner’s Permit for nine months, you are eligible for your Driver’s License at the age of 16 years and 3 months. You must hold your Learner’s Permit for a minimum of nine months.
- You must have parental consent to obtain a Driver’s License.
- Your parent/guardian must certify that you have driven at least 45 hours.
- 15 hours must have been completed after sunset.
If you are under age 18:
- You must complete a state approved driver’s education program.
- You must have held a Learner’s Permit for nine months.
If you are over age 18:
- If you have never held a Driver’s License, you must show proof that you have passed a state approved driver’s education course or that you have held a Learner’s Permit for 60 days before taking the road skills test.
If you are home-schooled:
- You may be taught the classroom and/or behind-the-wheel instruction at home.
- Your must take a road skills test at the DMV.
